About Fareham Journey

The current kaitiaki, custodians of the land, at Fareham dream of building a sustainable cohousing community in Pae Tū Mōkai, Featherston. The extensive property has a historic home, native bush, established gardens and orchard, a swimming pool, and an arts community on site.

Vision of a Cohousing Community

Our vision is to build an eco-friendly and sustainable neighbourhood on the property and share a vibrant intergenerational cohousing community with others.

Our kaupapa is to create a sustainable, supportive and intentional community. As we design the future Fareham cohousing neighbourhoods, we are looking for others who share our kaupapa to join us on this journey.

Sustainability

We prioritise environmentally responsible practices, from energy efficiency and waste reduction to organic gardening and sharing resources with each other. We want to build healthy and sustainable homes in our neighbourhoods.

Community

We care for each other in the community and create a strong sense of belonging through opportunities for shared activities, open communication, shared decision-making and mutual support. Everyone has their own private spaces in addition to the shared spaces.

Wellbeing

As the current kaitiaki, custodians of the land, we care for the whenua. We grow organic food in the shared gardens that nourishes the community. Working together in nature fosters connection and positive wellbeing.

What is Fareham Journey?

Fareham Journey is seeking an approach to sustainable living that addresses common issues encountered today. We’re a diverse and inclusive group who want to live in a supportive intergenerational community where we share resources, grow vegetables in our shared gardens, share a weekly meal together, and create a supportive environment for everyone to thrive.

We have an art community onsite called the Fareham Creative Space (FCS). This is an independent charitable trust that supports hauora and wellbeing by providing art and pottery studios and workshops.

What is Cohousing?

We get it! Not everyone has heard about cohousing. As more cohousing communities are created around New Zealand, these concepts are becoming more familiar. Some even say cohousing is the answer to the housing crisis.

Cohousing is different from a commune. Cohousing communities have neighbourhoods of privately owned homes with a unit title. They are designed for encouraging social interactions with others as we go about our day-to-day activities.

There is a common house where the community comes together regularly, shares kai, holds community meetings with shared decision-making, as well as for educational purposes.

Supportive Community

Become part of a diverse, supportive, and collaborative community where collective decision-making and shared resources enhance everyday life sustainably and promote wellbeing.

The Best of Both Worlds

In addition to your private home and garden, you have access to the communal gardens, a shared common house, shared facilities (like laundry and work rooms), and spaces to engage with the community for a balanced and connected lifestyle.

An Intentional Community

We welcome diversity at Fareham Journey. Everyone is unique and everyone is valued. Together, we are designing the future neighbourhoods we want to live in at our cohousing community so that the people and the land can thrive.

Our Events

We welcome you to visit Fareham at a time that suits us both. Contact us to organise. We don’t have any public events planned, but we will add dates here when we do.
